As I have said before, a download is a cheap alternative for posers
who don't want to do the job right.
As I see it a tuner has 5 choices
PC 5 with auto tune module
SEST
Direct Link
Master Tune
ThunderMax
I can't any one of these is better than the other, but I can say that
they will all do better than a canned map (which is all a download
is)(and since the downloads are OEM supplied they are probably
emissions compliant therefore going to exhibit all the same problems
as a bike right out of the crate).
Both the ThunderMax and the PC5 profess to be self tuning (I doubt if
they are perfect) they will give the owner input (guidance) in gaining
a proper tune.
NOTE - There is no magic tuneup bullet, you can't bolt it on and ride
away happy, a great tuneup EVOLVES after a significant period of
farting and fiddlin, experimentation, miles of riding, many starts in
different climates. It requires a rider gain a reasonable
understanding of the system and what is happening underneath him. A
given amount of computer savvyness and a great deal of patience. A
willingness to wrap your head around tuning concepts and their effect
on performance. And a willingness to change the hardware if it is
affecting the tune negatively.
YOU CANNOT PLUNK DOWN A CREDITCARD AND SAY I WANT THAT BY 5PM AND
EXPECT TO BE ANYWHERE NEAR 100% HAPPY
Yes, I understand all this.
It's not a matter of expecting too much although H-D at no time mentions
that the download will not work with exhaust mods and, in fact, the stage
1 96 inch kit works very well with exhaust mods.
Everyone knows that the SEST will do a better job than the download. We
were led to believe that the SEST would void the warranty. It turns out
that the only thing that will void the warranty is exceeding the 5500rpm
rev limit, something that H-D advertizes that the download will permit
and is included with the stage 2 upgrade.
The PC5 may be a great tuning device but previous dealings with Dynojet's
warranty people have put me right off.
Thundermax may be also great but it is not as they advertize either and
also has limitations.
One of which, for both of the above, is that it will void the warranty
and in some cases, even cause dealers to refuse to work on the bike.
Not sure if the direct link will void the warranty and that may be what
the other dealership is using to adjust the download.
As for posers, all we were looking for was a reasonable boost in
performance with reliability and warranty. Nobody questions that the SEST
is far better, we all know that. It was a cost/benefit calculation.
