Re: Anti-wobble (I hope)

It's not so much th' wobble problem as it is that this fix ain't
skookum. Just because you can mount somethin' there, doesn't mean
it's a good idea.

You could be right. I guess time will tell........

I can see the logic in *some* problem with
"rear stear" because of the rubber mount. I haven't had any problem with it on
any of the Harleys that I've owned, & I tend to side with Len on the high speed
wobble issue. It's more of a maintenance & rider issue. I haven't had any
problem with it on this bike.

I have on th' Pig Fucker, but never heard of it on a pre-rubber mount
chasis, ever. That means I don't agree with Len, I s'pose.

I also understand what you're sayin' about the mount location, but I'm
hopin' that R.E.'s expert is correct about that not being an issue.

I also don't agree with his *expert*. It's indisputable that th'
tranny casting was _not_ designed nor engineered for anything beyond
retaining fluid. This *fix* is pushing th' design beyond th' stresses
it was intended to withstand. Have you looked at one? I have, and
that's what I'm basing my opine on.

Once again, you may be right. I've heard a lot of opinions on what
causes the instability, & a lot of disagrement on the current fixes available,
but I seem to be missing your's & others solution. What do you think should be
done to correct the issue?

All three
versions I've looked at use some similar mount system. Either the same three
rear bolts, or all the bolts around the entire oil bucket. This just looked
like the best of the lot to me, & I haven't heard of *any* failures.

Besides being a relatively new product, how would ya hear about a
failure? Some poor bastid goes down due to th' stress failure and
subsequent oil leak, wads th' bike up, and if he lives, don't know WTF
happened. Who's gonna check to see if that was th' cause? Nobody.
'Sides, any visible damage could be blamed on th' wreck itself. Th'
accident report would prolly have th' exact same cause as RE's last
tank slapper... rider error, too fast fer conditions.

That scenario might play out in a catastrophic failure & crash, however
I'm referring to the non-catastrophic failures such as cracked castings, serious
oil leaks that occur while the bike is parked or in the drive, etc. You know,
kind of like Phil's "leak" in front of the Hog den.............8^)

One last note. As I was reading through other forums somethin' kinda
popped out of th' discussions. Seems peeps like th' improved handling
and are subsequently pushin' th' bikes harder than before. Faster in
th' twisties, etc. Perhaps beyond their abilities due to a false
sense of security?

That's a possibility for folks younger than me, but I'm pretty well past
the pushin' it stage. That's why I'm on a bagger.

Everyone on those forums are old fucks on baggers like us. Pretty
sure we are th' biggest demographic of MC accidents and deaths lately.
It was just an obsevation that struck me as I was readin' their
accounts of handling improvements.

That's a case of incomplete statistics. The numbers are correct, but
they don't include all the relevant data. The age group is correct, but they
don't include how much of their previous life was spent ridin'. Kinda like "the
dead biker wasn't wearin' a helmet" doesn't include that he was cut in half at
the diaphragm. Take a look at that hdforums group. There's a *bunch* of guys
in there our age & older either gettin' their first bike or comin' back after 30
years of "raisin' a family & bein' responsible". They think the roads & ridin'
is no different than it was in 1978. Some of the poor bastards are in for a
rude reality check..................

Plus, in the last year or so
I've started followin' Len around a lot. How much trouble can that get me into?

Heh, dunno, I've only ridden 3/4 of a mile with him <g>.

God, I hate havin' to explain a joke..........8^)

Like I said, hope to hell I'm wrong. My analytical brain just can't
get past how those flimsy assed castings would be a good idea to use
fer anything other than what they're s'posed to be for.

And I hope I never have to test it's anti-wobble ability. You could
very well be right, time will tell. I appreciate your viewpoint & it will give
me something to keep an eye on. That's worth a lot, 'course I'm gonna rip ya on
the $8 but have a couple cold Coors on my tab.............8^)
