Barkeep!
A round for the house from the top shelf, I'm celebrating!
It's been a while since I poked my head in here for much more than a look around; life sure changes when the patter of little feet enters the house. I'm glad to see Roach is doing a fine job keeping the doors to this place open.
Almost two years ago, my bride and I moved to a new house in anticipation of our little bundle of joy. In the move I gained a nice attached 2 car garage to replace my small, detached, one car shop at the old place. Of course when you have an attached garage without a car in it, it becomes a catch all for the junk a family can accumulate and ours was no exception. It got to the point I barely had room to pull the single bike in and I had to be creative when the Sportster joined the family.
During the past year, the little woman also began to complain about having to scrape ice from the car windows and having to haul the baby out into the cold on the way to the car every winter morning. Seems she thinks if we put the car in the garage her life would be easier and the baby would like it better. I couldn't argue with her logic and thought it might be nice to have my truck inside next to her car on those cold mornings. After several false starts and having to beg people to take my money to do the work, I finally got a shop finished and started moving in over the weekend. I've posted a few pics of the progress across the street. Basically the shop is a 30x30x10 metal building with the walls finished to 8'. I've still got to do a few things like build a workbench in front of the pegboard, hang a few cabinets on the wall, plumb air lines, and add a few more lights but at least I can start moving things in.
I've spent almost every free moment of the last three months getting to this point. I framed all the walls with wood and installed the OSB wallboard myself. I also ran all of the electrical from the breaker box out and even hung the garage door and opener. Future plans include a small bathroom in the back corner (pipes are already there, just gotta hook up the water and add a septic tank) and a platform for storage along the back wall about 8' high and 8' deep. I've also got to pull cable, telephone, and CAT5 from the house thru the conduit I buried for that purpose, can't have a doghouse without toys. And just to make everyone jealous, that's a 3" drain in the floor running out about 5' past the edge the slab.
I tried to make sure I had enough electrical to handle anything I should be doing so I had a separate meter installed feeding a 220v 200 amp breaker box. I've already ran the 8-2 wire for my mig welder, just got to install the receptacles in the front and rear walls. All 110v outlets are wired with 12-2 on 20 amp breakers, I did go a little overboard by running no more than 4 outlets to a breaker and spacing the outlets every 4 feet but I didn't want to starve anything for power or have to look for an extension cord. I also left enough room in the breaker box for a little expansion just in case. I'll eventually setup some type of climate control for the really hot or cool days but that will come later. I did find a 3000 watt electric air heater I hung over the workbench area to knock the chill off but it's gonna need some help if it turns really cold out.
All I've got to do now is finish moving all the workshop related stuff out of the attached garage, clean out and dispose of the junk that has gathered, and get the car and truck inside before the end of the month. Maybe if I get all that done and get the deck fixed before spring I'll get to ride one of the bikes somewhere besides work.
