Re: The sound of silence - a question

Do you still need to mount another relay if you remove the stock horn and use the original wiring harness for a new louder horn? I've had 3 people tell me yes you do but the reason why sounds a lot like they have all been snorting powdered sugar mixed with Kitty Litter.

Well, you don't have to, but IMO it's worth the trouble to use a relay. I've seen it done, and done it myself, wiring from either the hot side of the ignition switch or from the hot side of the battery through the horn switch to the horn. I've also wired the horn button to trigger a relay and powered the relay from the hot side of the battery. In my experience, which was mostly with old stuff before I just gave in and started running damn near everything through relays, my push button horn switches lasted a lot longer before melting/welding themselves together/catching fire if I used them just to switch the relay. A lot less current running through them that way. A horn draws pretty decent current and the old push button switches didn't last too many cycles without going toes up in some usually noisy, smelly, or phlogiston releasing fashion. Once I joined the PowerItThroughRelaysAndUseTheSwitchAsASwitch religious faction, I pretty much never had to stop by the side of the road to either rip the horn off and toss it over the railroad tracks or put out that particular wiring fire again.

Plus, if you power the horn through a relay, it's normally noticeably louder.

If your stock wiring already uses a relay, you're golden. Just mount the horn and go. If the relay wiring is tiny and the horn draws a buncha amps, I'd rewire the relay, but there's no reason that I can think of to rewire the switching side of it.
