What's the point of Di-electric grease?

This insulation is two-fold in that it can keep the bad stuff out
(water, dirt, salt = corrosion + bad connection) and the good stuff in
(voltage and current). It also lubricates but is not something you
would want to use in bearings or other high load applications.

My understanding, which has changed since I first used
it, so that it's great for keeping contacts clean and water out.

It is!

Let's say
you have a bettery terminal, attached the terminal and then cover it in
grease to help prevent corrossion. But Dielectric grease does not conduct
electricity, so by putting it in the socket, aren't use basically shoving a
thin layer of insulation into the socket, making the connection between the
socket and the plug worse?

In low voltage applications such as 12 volt battery connections you
don't want to necessarily put it in the terminal ring - just around it
after the connection is made. More to follow...

I could see if you didn't have a boot, put the
socket on the plug and then but the grease over that, but grease IN the
socket doesn't make sense to me. Am I missing something?

Why yes, yes you are <g>!

For high voltage connections like spark plugs, coil wires, etc. the
potential is high enough that it wouldnt matter if there was a thin
film because it will find a way and make it's own path. You can
increase the resistance by using too much dielectric grease but not
enough to really matter. In addition, depending on the circumstance
and environment you really don't want any air pockets so a liberal
coating on everything before assembly is sometimes a good idea. All
that from a mechanical guy in an industry that deals with high voltage
daily so MMdoesV...
