Just wondering, why do people use these fancy GPS units instead of just
an old fashioned road map?

I can drive right up to the front of a house or business in the midst of
a
town I know nothing about. Using a GPS takes the edge trying to find
street
signs. You can see any highway in the area and miles away depending on
the
view you use, plus you can see the cites depending on the view and know
right away which direction you need to travel. Ever get off of a
interstate
and forget which way it was? I have, with my GPS I can know which way to
go
to get back to it. The GPS will not get you lost if you learn how to use
it
and program the Regions and waypoints for where you traveling. If you can
read a road map you can read a GPS.

OK, I took a ride to the HWY 49 Gold towns yesterday. About 250 miles
and brought along my new TomTom GPS. It found every place and the
roads. It kept everything a secret though. Even with over cast thunder
clouds the screen was not visible do to glare. To see and read what was
on it I had to stop and either disconnect it from the bike or completely
shade the screen. Basically a major pain in the ass.

I do not have any personal experience with Tom Tom but I do have a lot of
experience with Garmin products. I have a Garmin Quest II and have no
trouble reading the screen in any light.

Dale, I think your problem is, all LCD screens are not created equal.

On another newsgroup, I have read horror stories about Tom Tom's service.
I have also read from some folks not happy with Garmin but they have been
mostly overseas. I have had a few service issues over the years with some
of my Garmin units, and Garmin has always treated me great.

Anyhow, back to your screen. The Quest has the TFT display which makes it
much easier to read in bright sunlight.

I do not have a GPS on my bike, but do have one in my car and even in
direct sunlight, I have no trouble reading the Quest.

I bought the Garmin Zumo to go on the bike, if I am wearing my polorized
sun glasses I can't see the screen but can hear the audio on the radio.
without the sun glasses I can see the screen. Getting the security screw
undone takes a while if I want to take it off the bike. But it takes me
where I want to go, just not always the way I want to go.- Hide quoted text -

Could it be that your GPS screen is also polarized? It's possible that
if you rotate the GPS screen 90 degrees you'll be able to see it with
sunglasses on.
