It ran great for about 150 miles, then sounded like I had gotten
some bad gas (a mile after a fill-up), followed by progressively
increasing clatter. I limped it home praying (or whatever you want
to call it) that I wasn't doing more damage. It was too late/dark
to leave it and too far to push.
Ya'll have a drink or two on me.
What kind of damage might ensue if the pushrod locknut backed off?
That happened to me after my not-so-good HD tech installed
adjustables. Now my bike runs like shit. Not much power or acceleration
at all.
I've got less HP and torque than it had before.
You're asking the wrong guy, although others in here can speak to it,
and I'll take the tasty beverages anyway. At this moment I am
lamenting my decision to swap the cam tensioners as my scoot is still
not right and I will be miss MAMBM as a result. Details may be posted
if I ever finish wailing and gnashing teeth.
Have you had them re-adjusted yet? Apparently there is more to it than
meets the eye.
I enjoy wrenching right up to the point where I turn a perfectly
useful machine into an unrideable piece of crap, (semi-quoting
another RMHer) which I have done a couple times over the years,
although always fixable so far. (the last time was learning about
carburetors, this time it's pushrods and hopefully not a lot more)
As to the damage potential (see caveat above) I would expect something
between not much and a total cratering of the valve train, depending
on how much the rod length actually changed and how long and hard it
was thrashed on during that time.
George Pollard put a bug in my ear about a discussion on the TC88 list.
Something about a bad o-ring in an oil pump installation causing severe
sumping problem that
robbed HP. The tech that did the pushrods also installed a new Feuling oil
pump.
I had a mechanic friend take a look inside the cam chest and he said
something about oil that was continuing to come out after he had already
drained it that might be caused by an bad o-ring.
Coincidence?
