I stopped in Atlanta on my way back from Daytona two years ago, called a girl I hadn't seen in almost 20 years. We had lunch, and talked about a mutual friend of ours. For a couple of years he was my absolute best bud. Had a '74 Kawasaki Z1 that he'd let me borrow whenever I wanted. Had one of those connections where you could finish each other's sentences, always on the same wavelength, ya know?

He and I had both dated this girl, but he was head-over-heels for her and she never knew it. I told her about this and she said that she had felt the same but they never told each other. I also told her that he was devastated when they stopped dating.

She started writing letters to folks, trying to get ahold of him. She got a reply back from his mother. His mother knew exactly who she was because he had often told his mother about this girl. He killed himself in '01.

Well, I feel like total ***.
