As I said before I am very sorry to hear of your friend and especially
his lovely daughter. Since you have blessed this tangent I have a few
thoughts that I would express.

That man must have been going through pure, unmitigated hell for him
to think that death was his best option.

o Suicide is caused almost exclusively by
depression or other mental illness.

o Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death for all U.S.
men[1], killing many orders of magnitude more people
in the US than terrorism ever will.

o "22% of the single adult homeless population suffers from
some form of severe and persistent mental illness[2]

This country needs a war on mental illness, not drugs or Iraq.
