Re: FTF, Build Yer Own...

That's pretty cool Skiv, I'm hard to impress *** that impressed me. Anybody

It's pretty clear that he paid some serious attention to how the old
bikes were put together, and that he's got a serious dose of creativity
as well. That trick of notching the V-belts and putting in copper
rivets to look like an old riveted belt caught my eye. I'm wondering
how he attached his pulleys to the rear wheel. There are a couple ways
of doing it (I've paid some attention to the old bikes, too) but I
imagine he's chosen a way of doing it that he thinks is best. I want to
see inside his head about that.

So when ya startin' yer build, after the thinkin' and drinkin'? To create
something that never was before...nirvana.

Step zero was to hang up the mug for a while and put the brain in gear.

Step one was to find out what restrictions I had on the project. Got
that sorted.

Step two was to start looking at donor frames or custom builders. Got
that on the go.

Step three is to think about engines. I'm still wanting to use a
diesel, but evidently California is now part of Canada because the CARB
Tier III rules have killed small diesel sales here. However, I just
located a Kubota vertical twin that is still coming in. Failing all
else I could put a Briggs 16-horse gas v-twin in it after cutting off
some *** to make it look older.

So far you'll notice it's all thinkin'. I've been a little way down
this road before but never quite this far or with this much intention.
I have to get an engine first, otherwise I'm just wavin' my hands
around vaguely when it comes to answering the "how big a frame do you
need?" question.

One thing I can say that's different between Nebraska and BC -- I will
need proper lights and brakes at both ends to get past the inspections.
That's minor, though. Once past the inspections registration is
assured. Since the local HD shop is the provincial inspection station,
I'm kinda looking forward to inflicting this on them in a year or so.
