fluid level in m.c. never got low. but nothing pumps when I pump the
lever.
I mean, the piston moves freely and all, but no fluid goes down the
lines.
The service manual was where I started. I tried to be as well informed
as possible before I messed with something so important as my brakes.
The problem is that pumping the lever doesn't expel any air or fluid at
the bleeders. no matter how much I pump the lever, I can't generate any
pressure.
As others have mentioned it sounds for all the world like the piston isn't
coming back out all the way. If it's like mine there are two springs in
there, as you pull the lever there's a light feeling one that doesn't do
anything with the fluid and then resistance increases as you push in the
piston against it's spring. If you feel the second resistance when pulling
the lever and the lever moves the fluid should be moving. Are you sure the
piston is moving? If it were me I'd try tapping the side of the master
cylinder for a while and see if I could unstick it. Then, even if that
worked, I'd end up nervous and I'd get a kit and tear it down. Prolly got
gunk in the bore making the piston stick.
I look forward to hearing how things turn out.
I betcha this is exactly the issue, if the piston is not coming back to top
of bore, even half way then it is not picking up more brake fluid for the
next stroke.
Time for a rebuild kit on the master Cyl, ya get a new, spring, piston,
striking cover, disassemble, clean, & rebuild with the new parts from the
kit. Follow the manual close when it comes to taking the Switch assembly &
master cyl assemble off the handle bar, you could easily brake the stop light
switch!
Re-assemble all parts & hoses, compress both calipers as far as ya can to
back flow some of the old fluid ~UP~ to the master cylinder to prime & purge
any air introduced.
Then proceed with the flush & bleed procedures until all the old cappy fluid
has been purged through the system.
Good luck, and make sure it holds good pressure before taking it out on
public roads!
