what, if any, precautions, preparation, and/or special doo-dads
do I need for swapping the gear on that cam (using the gear
from my old cam)?
Make damned sure you mark the gear to cam position before
removing the gear (the gear has the keyway, but there's not a
key on the cam). When it comes time to install the gear put the
cam into the freezer and the gear in the oven. Get it in the
right position the first time and the gear will almost fall down
on the cam.
and Spunky agrees:
Yep, exactly what Hoppy said. If you've got the big hydraulic press
and the right arbors you don't need to be concerned about freezing
the cam and heating the gear, but if you're working with three pair
of pliers, a cinder block and a swinging press heating/freezing
makes light work of it.
And absolutely positively mark the position. You'll hate yourself
if you get the gear installed timed wrong.
well, I did the marking, tossed the old cam in the ol' 12 ton press,
got the old gear off, and what do I notice as I put the new cam in the
press so I can take the wrong gear off of it?
yeah, I didn't notice it until I had both camshafts side-by-side, but I
wuz way off, it aint a 70-77 cam either it's a fuckin' pre-70 cam, I
could make the fucker work the valves, but the ignition portion would
be a bitch....
So I sez to cousin Dave, what the *** do we do now? well, he's gonna
call the place he bought it from, do some bitchin', and send it back to
'em...and he'd gotten another cam ordered (from Fog Hollow this time)
before I even got home.
On the plus side, I got to take a good look at Dave's Dad's tractor
collection (he restores antiques as a hobby, see) Dave took my son for
a spin on a 1936 Allis Chalmers (a model B I think) and I took a good
long look at a Ford Model A with the tractor conversion installed...
and I may become the proud owner of another project....I noticed a
slightly <sfsf> disassembled Honda Odyssey, made a comment, and Dave
sez if I haul it outta the shop I can have it.....but I gotta take the
Ski-Doo that the engine came out of too.
I told him I'd take the stuff off his hands if he promised not to tell
my wife where it came from <G>
what the hell, I need another ATV type thing for Deer Season, and
everything that Odyssey needs I can make with a grinder and a welder,
ya know?
