I've heard that line before
I'll file it under famous last words and hope you never have to eat them

Not while I currently have a job paying more. If I am laid off, it's a whole new ballgame, but I'm not about to take a 10-30% paycut just to leave this job.

Yeah but the reduction in taxes, etc. due to that pay cut could leave your take home nearly untouched.

My taxes currently are pretty low since I claim 5 dependents :)

When I retired last year (53 years old, with 30.1 years of service) at 70% of my pay, my net increased slightly. My taxes went way down, no more social security (since I'm retired), no more mandatory contribution into my retirement fund to the tune of 5% (now 9%) of my gross.

I tried retirement once, well, semi-retirement, in '97. I just did consulting on the side. Actually made even more money, but it wasn't steady. This was okay when I was single, but when I got married in '99 and took on a family, I had to decide if I wanted the hassle of my own business or working for someone else. I hated the paperwork (taxes, billing, etc) of owning my own business, so I decided to go back to work for someone else.

My annual income went down, but my net was fine. Of course my Mrs. insisted I needed some place to go on a regular basis......so I took a part time gig over at Wally World.

First time in 30 years I turn my cellphone OFF when I get to work, and my employer doesn't have my cell#. I go in, take a box of cash to a register and stand there BSing with people, waving crap under a laser, and taking their money. No responsibility (other than to have my till balance at the end of the night), no pressure, no deadlines.......every two hours they take me off my register, send me to break or lunch, and when I get back they move me somewhere else. Someone else has to think, someone else has to worry about ***.......<sfsf>

The full timers are happy to see me when I get there.....I help take the load off them during peak hours and relieve them for lunches and breaks....<sfsf>

but if I could get paid to just ride my geezerglide, I'ld take that one up in a heartbeat :)

I get paid just to get out of bed in the morning, going for a ride when I want (mostly) is icing on the cake.

I really wish I had been able to finish out my military career, but the measly $200 a month I get for disability doesn't go very far.
