You're right, Roger (on all three points). Here where I live,
citizens' groups are getting together to buy decibel-meters for
local cops (these are ritzy areas that border on a highway much
loved by local riders). And demanding enforcement, passing
local ordinances about time of day, etc.

I'm thinking that (a) the genie is out of the bottle, and we're
going to have to deal with noise and emmissions standards, and
(b) objective standards afforded by decibel and emmissions
meters might be better tools of policy than cops empowered to
make arbitrary decisions about noise, or laws against changing
your pipes, your air cleaner, or tuning your carb, adjusting
your ECP ...

If all this comes to pass, I'll be able to get what I've been
looking for for years; an exhaust system that makes power but not
noise. Few things could make me happier.

If the laws are written to allow us to tinker within standards, then
the aftermarket and the MoCo will respond with a whole range of stuff
that will allow us to get the torque/hp/sound/poser profiles we want.

If they say thou shalt never touch any part of your fuel, air,
exhaust, and ignition systems, then we'll get whatever the HD
engineers, lawyers and bean counters give us.

I don't think the latter will be the case.

There are communities writing such laws right now.

To much money involved for
it to ever happen. Greed rules the U.S. and the government won't stand
in the way of that. Plus EPA and CARB compliant high performance parts
are available for nearly every make and model of car and truck out
there and they work. Motorcyclist and manufacturers alike will surely
cry foul if they aren't allowed to manufacture and install products
that improve performance while meeting the letter of the law.

Probably the most cogent argument against such madness. Set the
standards and let yankee ingenuity solve the problem.

It could be interesting.
