Grab a beverage of your choice on me, while I unfold this tale of minor
wrenching and major stupidity.
Bone stock 2005 FLHT. Did the Stage 1 upgrade, kinda on a budget. Put
on some Cobra Slashdown slip ons (the 3rd picture from the top...)

...jammed a K&N filter element in the stock breather...

...and drilled a bunch of holes...

...in the backing plate. The holes pictured are not the actual holes.
They are for demonstration purposes only. The holes are on the bottom
and rearward section of the backing plate with the idea that rain may
not get sucked into the carb that way. Adjusted the idle mixture screw.
For a budget stage 1 it kicks some ass - relatively speaking. Hasn't
coughed or sneezed once, and a noticeable performance increase. More
snort. A bit more responsive. The slip ons aren't obnoxious at all.
If I really jump on it they cackle pretty good, but as long as I ride
normally it won't wake any neighbors. They have packing that may
deteriorate over time and cause them to become louder, but I'll deal
with that when it happens. Overall I'm quite pleased.
Then a wave - no, a tsunami of stupidity washed over me. I brought the
wife out to listen to it. She had no prior knowledge of my intent to do
any of this, and I shoulda kept it that way. Told her I bought a new
filter element, but I lied through my teeth about the mufflers. She
believed me when I told her I yanked out the baffles in the stock
mufflers and put in a couple new baffles. Aha! I pulled it off! Then
she asked 'The Question.' "How much did this cost?" Stunned! I
didn't see it coming. I can't lie to her about the money! I stared
silently at her. She glared back. Our eyebrows randomly raised and
lowered ever so slightly. More deafening silence. I felt like Eli
Wallach in The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly in the standoff scene before
Clint Eastwood drilled him. More staring. Then Clint - I mean my wife -
drew and fired. "TELL ME!" It hit me in the chest and spun me to
the floor. She coldly walked up to me as I lay there wounded. As I
gasped for breath I told her how much. She twitched once and then
finished me off with a small caliber "Then I get a new TV!" to the
head. Lois walked back into the house and as life ebbed from my body I
swear I heard that spaghetti western music. "Ooeeooeeooooo, wah wah
waaah."
Who ever said asking for forgiveness is easier than asking for
permission didn't know Lois.

Umm don't you wear the kilt in your family? I tell myself thats the reason
I'm not married anymore (but there are plenty more I'm sure) The day
someone tells me or balks at what I spend $ on there will be a problem.
I'm sure wifey works very hard to contribute to family fund right? and
therefor has legitimate right to express opinion on purchases. Of all the
things a less honorable man could spend $ on (chippy in an apartment,
gambling, excessive drink) I think she will realize (or allow to be
shown) that you deserve to spend on yourself once in a while. Big
Stinkies's drinks are on me tonight
