Yep...it started out quiet as can be, but about 1K miles I noticed a
little ticking noise. No biggie...just figured it was a noisy TC88.
About 2K it got worse, and at 3K it's pretty damned noisy. (Of course,
noise is a relative thing...might be that it's not too loud for a TC88.
This is my first one, but it sure sounds loud to me.) Closing in on 4K
now, and at certain RPMs it sounds like a bad lifter in an old Chevy
V8. At an idle you can hear the tick tick tick. Can't really tell if
it's a click or a chain type noise. Hard to explain. Get to about 1800
RPM and it makes a pretty good racket. Ya get to about 2400 RPM and the
frequency of ticks abruptly changes to about 50% of what it was. Just
as loud, but it's like the noise misses every other tick. About 2600
RPM becomes almost silent. Keep accelerating slowly and at 2800 the
noise comes right back until about 3100 RPM. Above that it's kinda hard
to tell just what it's doing.
If I had to explain what it sounds like, I'd say it was a chain that is
making the noise, and the harmonics of the vibrations at different
speeds makes the noise come and go. Ya know when you were a kid and you
tried to shake a rope up and down in order to make 'waves' travel it's
length...well that's what I imagine is happening to a chain or other
component of the valve train inside somewhere. At certain speeds, the
vibrations make the component rattle just right so it's hitting
something inside. At other RPMs the chain won't make the 'waves.'
Hence, no noise. I may be waaaay off, but that's what it sounds like to
an untrained ear.
What really bothers me is that it's getting progresivly worse. I took
it in at 3K and had a wrench ride it around. He said, and I quote,
"Well, it's noisier than most, but unless the oil light comes on or it
starts to smoke, I wouldn't worry about it." ?!?!? I told the service
manager that a couple days ago and he raised his eyebrows saying
'That's an unusual answer.' He didn't seem pleased.
I love the bike so far, but the noise scares me. I hope they'll find
something wrong instead of telling me it's 'normal.' We'll see what
they say Tuesday or Wednesday. (fingers crossed)
