Step up to the bar folks and have a cold one on me, whilst I tell ya a
story.
So I posted a while back asking about the best route from sf to
seattle, gotsome good advice from the folks here, so here is what I
did.
I was going up to seattle to check out the sea-fair hydroplane races
over the weekend. So I left the bay area Wendsday at 1pm and made
tracks north on I-5 for 260 miles to Weed california. now for those
who have had th epleasure of riding on i-5 between sf and weed you know
its straight and hot as a pistol. My 03 heritage was humming along
while the midday sun heated my leathers up. Stopped for gas outside
of redding shot the shit with old timers at the rest stop. people
seem to be much more open to talking to a lone rider - or at least that
is what it seemed like on this trip. love talking to the people I meet
some of the nicest folks. Anyway kept going north till i hit weed -
265 miles - turn north on 97 and head for bend Or. sun is just going
down - excellent light - nice view of the eastern side of mt. shasta
stop for a pic
http://www.ridgeworksinc.com/sf2seattle.html keep blasting down the 97
till I hit bend - 489 miles down for the day =)
Get up the next day and keep heading north on 97 - somewhere out in the
middle of nowhere mr. police man decides to pull me over - shit.
apprently 75 is to fast in the 55 zone that all oregon backroads are :(
my lucky day as mr. police man was nice and let me off with a warning
:) - get the scoot going again and head to Maupin Or. in the Deushutes
(sp?) river caynon real nice. Out of Maupin to The Dalles over the
columbia river bridge and into washington where I started to head west
on 14. Took 14 to Carson Wa, where I headed north again on the wind
river hyw. now this is where the ride started to get real nice... too
national forest roads (90 and 25) behind mt st helens up to route 12.
The ride was great but real slow - many many tight corners with steep
drop off shoulders, still amazing. Once at 12 I wesnt west to 7 north
through elbe and into tacoma and seattle... 867 miles . nice. killer
weather.
hung out and partied and wathed the races, blue angles and other
airshow types.
on the way back I was planning on doin 101 south - a look atthe weather
showed me that there was fog hugging the coast at least 1/2/ to 2/3 of
the day... so nope I thought I would see if I just power down i-5 -
which I did - seattle to ashland (nice town) then ashland down to the
bay area... all in all a great ride.
I am riding down to las vegas bike week in another 4 weeks - the anual
ride through death valley :))
Thanks for listening - have another drink - I'm payin!
John
