I made great progress cutting my "lower loop" trail over the long
weekend. I also started running my HF chain saw blade sharpener - a
necessary evil when stuffing the bar into the ground every 3 minutes
as is pretty much inevitable while clearing woods. I was pretty
careful, and got almost a month of use, but finally my saw was cutting
U-turns (nicked one rock too many). Once I had the sharpener going, I
pretty much re-sharpened every break or two. Why not have a razor-
sharp blade all the time? It doesn't do a bad job - $30 easily well
spent.
The lower loop trail is pretty much done now, at least the rough-in
part. I was doing mostly clean up and tweaking the bad spots on
Monday, such as blind obstacles and overly tight spacings. My test
was to ride as fast as I could on my ATV, then any time I hit a tree,
once I came too, I'd go back and cut it down. Now I just have to
figure out how to get a grading blade in there (I need a 3pt hitch on
my ATV) - I have some bumps and off-cambers I really want to re-
configure flat. I was going to bring one of my bikes up this past
weekend and start riding it (I feel like such a hillbilly on my ATV
for some reason - http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7103/7295893374_34b3e2414c_c_d.jpg),
but got lazy and didn't feel like loading it. I still have a couple
of spots where the trail turns a little tight also - I put a few lock-
to-lock twisties into the earlier sections of trail, but find that
they suck and add no measure of fun, so I'm straightening out the
trail whenever I can. The overall loop is ~1.5 mile long, with about
another ~.5 mile in other interconnecting and/or sub-loops, or trails
that aren't tied in yet. I'll probably start investigating the 'upper
loop' trail next weekend - that's going to be the gnarly one!
Over the weekend, I was thinking of the demise of RMD - a victim of
high-speed internet, IMHO. Now, any schlub can be active in an
internet forum. I was thinking about how I've been active in the
group for almost 15 years. Wow - something with that kind of staying
power is pretty important and influential in terms of life
experience. No wonder I'm going down kicking and screaming. Not bad
for something that doesn't exist except in the imagination of its 547
members.
