Thanks for the ride report, Keith!
Sounds like a very productive day with your boy.
Tell them both that I said "Hi!".

I've been green with envy all week reading all of the banter on
http://georgiaoffroad.com about the Highland Park GOR Day, knowing full well
that my Saturday was filled to the max with *OTHER* obligations.
Had to work on Friday, Saturday..Sister and Nephew are up for a visit, Scout
fundraiser from Noon to 3:30, mini-me#2 has a b-day party to attend from
4-6pm, Wife is out shopping for food and Easter goodies, Church & family
events on Sunday..Cue Honda's "I wanna Ride" commercial and give me a
shoulder to cry on!
Met up with the better half at church to pick up clothes @3:45 so that we
could shed the Scout uniforms and swap into party clothes and she casually
says "I was planning on taking him to the party if you have something else
you *need* to do" . Somewhere in the transition between the Class A pants
and jeans a plan begins to form.
I take Mammy up on her offer and wink conspiratorially to #1 while I request
a vehicle swap from Mazda to the Expedition just in case the Children's
Minister from Church still has possession of my truck this late in the day.
Once we are heading back to the house, I lay out the plan and give marching
orders to "him who doesn't remember if it pertains to work" (almost 13..nuff
said). At the house, it is a mad scramble as daylight is burning and pushing
4:05pm, but somehow we manage to get everything located, loaded and ready to
go, and I'm at the Booger Hollow gas station filling the tanks by 4:25.
We pull into the parking lot at Davenport Mountain OHV (
http://www.fs.fed.us/conf/rec/ohv/davenport-trail-map.htm) at 4:44 to find
it virtually empty. With it being the first open day of the season, I was
expecting the place to be packed, but the only other vehicle in sight was an
Expedition with a family from Marietta, GA (no bikes) just checking out the
trail map. We exchanged pleasantries, discussed what the park had to offer
and they were off after wishing us a good ride.
Still in disbelief, we unload, suit up and head out. There was very little
mud (mostly puddle at the water bars) and traction was great *most*
everywhere (more on that later). Made a fast run down the connector with #1
leading the way and he is riding soooo much more confident than he was on
our last trip out. Get to the main trail and he takes a right to run the
loop clockwise and we immediately begin to climb the switchbacks.
Right off the bat it is evident that the lakefront development that borders
the property (and the trail on the Southern boundary) has blossomed over the
winter. Several new cabins and even more lots cleared and foundations
poured. This section is a little technical with quite a few areas that have
a steep ascent right after a 90 degree turn offering no run-up at all. The
lad astounds me with just a single stall in his quest for the summit! (Which
dear old dad replicates because he was following a mite too close. There
were a few places where the leaves were fairly thick and I learned a new
2-smoke lesson about how you don't want to let her get on the pipe. on a bed
of leaves..on a steep ascent. Never did fall, but the back tire tried to
pass the front a couple of times!
Up at the top, there is a new home being built and the view is astounding,
so I whip out the camera to capture the moment, only to discover that
someone has removed the batteries, Arghhh!
After the summit, we were back on the gas and we made it to about halfway up
the long climb to the highest point on the property (North/Northwest peak as
shown on the map here
http://www.fs.fed.us/conf/rec/ohv/davenport-trail-map.htm ) Wilson is doing
pretty well until his friend *Mo* parts company in a steep section of trail
with knee-deep leaves. He is revved to the max, spinning like crazy and
still sliding back down the hill, so we turn around and go back to the truck
for a drink then decide to run it counter-clockwise (2-way trails) back to
the other side of that same hill. Along what on the due North part of the
map appears to be a straight section (right under the 101 designation) from
the lake to the FS road, there was this killer high-speed section that I've
never noticed before because we always had newbs with us on previous visits
and speeds were Slooooooowwww. Lost of water-bars, long straights ( I hit
finally 4th WO and 5th gear for the first time since I bought the KDX back
in December) and berms to rail in most corners. WooHooo, that was so much
fun, we ran it both directions 3 more times!!
By 7:20, we were back at the truck, loaded up and headed to a friends house
for some take out Mexican and a cold beverage. Wow, what a day! Awesome
weather, one-on-one time with my soon-to-be teenager and the whole place to
ourselves, what more could you ask for except a few GOR buds? Man I love
where we live ... Including the trip back home, loading up and getting to
the site, we were playing in the dirt within an hour of our decision to
ride..and all for a whopping $5 ride fee.
Not HP (and I still hate that I missed it) but not a bad consolation prize
either.
