Of yesterday's ride...

Late last week we had a fair amount of rain in the valleys and snow in
the mountains. After a hot, dry, dusty summer, this was what we've
been looking forward to. We had some great conditions during the last
week of September too but it dried out shortly and we were back to dry
and dusty.

Saturday evening, as Murray and I talked about where we should go on
Sunday, a part of my mind said, "desert", fearing the snow and mud
that certainly would greet us in the high country. But not really
wanting to give in to the seasonal transition from the mtns to the
dez, another part of my me said, "lets give the mtns one more chance,
we might not get another one."

Murray concurred, the mtns won out...

On our drive up to our normal parking spot off the Pine/Featherville
road, we started seeing snow much lower than we had expected. Upon
arrival, there was a light cover of snow, elevation about 5K, temps in
the low 40s.

We have to ride a few miles of dirt road to access the trails. The
road was a mix of snow, frozen mud and, where the sun was hitting,
greasy, slick black mud. Anytime we gained any altitude we ran into
more and more snow/ice/mud. After about 13 miles of poking around,
trying to find a passable route into Lime Cr, we gave up and headed
back to the truck.

As it was still fairly early in the day, on our way back to town, we
stopped off at our local foothill play area and got in a wonderful 30
mile ride. Traction was great, fall colors spectacular. Oh well,
although littered with ample whoops, at least we got some TST in, not
a total loss for the day...

Monday was one of those special Fall days, warm and sunny. Murray has
Mondays off so the temptation to ride was there, but I had to take
care of some business at my wife's office. We're moving locations, had
to meet with the T1 providers at the new warehouse...

Tuesday was another specatularly warm and sunny day. As I was about to
head out the door to do some long neglected yard work, the phone rang.

Murray: "whatcha doin?"
Me: "about to head out for yard work, why?"
Murray: "get out there and get it all done, I'm taking tomorrow off,
we're goin' riding!"

WooHooo! Another evening discussion led us to the conclusion: probably
dusty already in the desert, whoops in the foothills and mud/snow in
the high country. What to do...

The temptation of the mtns was too much to resist, we headed back up
to the Baumgartner area, once again parking off the Pine/Featherville
road.

The dirt road was still a bit slick on the margins but most of the low
elevation snow was gone, we had no problem going in our normal way,
hitting the SFk of Lime at Roanhide. We rode the SFk up to Bremner, up
to Iron Mtn, across Blue Ridge to Presidents and back down to the MFk
Lime.

We pushed a little snow on the way up Bremner and across the ridges on
the way to Prez, but nothing we couldn't get through. There were a few
spots where I was sliding down a snowy slope, mostly out of control,
thinking, "I really hope we don't have to come back up this..."

The conditions couldn't have been much better, traction up the
ying-yang, bright blue skies with nary a cloud in sight, temps in the
upper 60s and low 70s. We were both "on our game", Murray was rippin',
and for some strange reason, I was able to keep up. We traded off and
on for lead, what a hoot! Without dust, we were able to hang right on
each other's ***. This got me into trouble once, I was too close
behind Mur when we hit the little rock step up on the upper end of SFk
Lime. He made it up the rock, but hesitated for just an instant on
top. As I was only a couple of feet from his rear wheel, I too had to
hesitate. But this meant I lost all MO and got stuck with only one
wheel on top. Unable to balance I plopped up against the high side,
had to roll back down and hit it again.

We finished up with some honest to goodness cow trailing in the hills
between the mtns and the highway. We got partially lost once, but
managed to find our way out.

Just under 60 miles, which puts me at 10.1 miles short of my goal of
3000 for the year. With 10 Sundays (standing ride day with Mur) left
in the year, I'm now hoping to get closer to 3500 miles, which will be
a personal high.

I keep a ride log, here is a chart of my miles by month for 07:

john,

Representing a bloc vote of stakeholders in RMD, Inc, I have to point out
the poor third quarter performance results this past year according to the
chart. Can we get figures for 2006 as well? I think you will see the major
sales campaign aka "Idaho Spodefest" was a stirling success.

I believe the unassasilable synergy of the world-wide program will prove
that it should be continued for its positive effect on miles per month and
grin metrics.
