Wow, what a competition! Do you supply your own equipment? I've
never heard of a contest like this. I imagine the fishing events would
be my undoing (especially fly fishing). Nice variety though. Do you
know how many participants you had this year? Is it an open class? (13
years olds competing aganst 50 year olds?). Very kewl, and congrats on
being the best loser, Jay.

Had our 2nd annual "Ultimate Sportsman" competition this past weekend
at my gun club. We set up 8 events:
Pistol - 10 shots @ 25 yards shooting at hanging clay pigeons
Rifle - 5 shots @ 100 yards benchrested
Shotgun - 25 rounds (standard trap round)
Flintlock - one shot at 30 yards at a melon (cantelopes this year)
Fly fishing - 10 casts into hoola hoop @ ~30 ft.
Open-reel fishing - 10 casts into hoola hoop @ ~50 ft.
Archery - 5 shots into 3-D range, double scores for shooting no-sight
recurve or long-bow
Golf - 5 shots chipped across a pond (~90 yards) at flag - closest
ball scores
A bunch of members compete against each other, and the prize for the
winner this year was a .22 target pistol.
I made a point to keep my self-proclaimed "coolest gun" award (w/ my
tricked-out faux M203), then proceeded to win the rifle stage (won
last year too) with it. I also won the archery stage with an
unsighted recurve, which is no small miracle since I typically can't
hit the broad side of a barn with a bow.
I ended up taking second place (dammit - I hate being the best
loser). Looking back over the scores, it was a dead heat (+/- 1
point) all the way through the entire event with the guy who took me.
The breaker? Golf, of all dumbass things. I personally don't play
golf, but I can hit a decent chip shot occasionally. I had several
scoring balls, but my best ended up 37ft from the pin. The other guy
didn't have a single ball in play, but then managed to accidentally
bounce his last ball off the water, which cleared the other side of
the pond and hit a tree stump, which bounced it toward the pin, where
it finally rolled over to a stop 10' from the flag. ***. Payback
for my miracle on the bow course, I suppose.
