What else has tripled in price over the last 30 years? Or, <gulp> quadrupled
as the OP suggests could happen? I don't know.
That's easy - college tuitions. I get to buy 3 of them over the next
10 years.
I went to Penn State in the early-mid 80's, and was paying $4,500/yr
as an out-of-stater. Now, out-of-state tuition at PSU is just over
$29,000/year. That's almost a 6.5 times increase. I don't know how
ANYBODY affords it. God knows I can't.
How about housing? My POS 1200 sq. ft ranch sold for $60k in 1986. I
bought it for $85k in 1990. In 2006, a similar house brought $325k.
That's a 5.5 times increase in the same amount of time, although I
expect the 2008 amount to be down at ~$250, so you an call it 4x if
you want to.

PS - this oil/gas thing is flash in the pan, just like in the 70's.
Sure, gas is going to cost $3/gallon, but don't worry, in 10 years,
you'll be making twice as much, so $3 will be cheap.
