So last August our own Opie was generous enough to pass his
TrailTech Endurance computer on to me after he upgraded to the Lynx
model. Now obviously there's not a direct fit application kit for a
1985 model dirt bike, but does anyone know what I might need to make
this thing work (including you, if you're listening OP).

What I really want is the aluminum top-mount protector, but I can't
figure out if the one shown here (third photo down) will work for me?

http://trailtech.net/motorcycle_protectors.html

As you can see, it doesn't list any specific models, so I don't
know if it's a "universal" mount, or if I'm going to have to go with
the cheapo plastic handlebar mount kit?

I'm also not sure which sensor kit (or individual parts) I may
need. Basically I have the computer, the sensor cable, the
instructions and that's it. I'm happy to buy the parts needed to
install the thing, I just need to know which parts to buy?

I've installed 3 of these now, and my recommendation is to forget
about the alum. protector and just go with the cheapo plastic
handlebar mount kit. They work just fine, have never had one fail yet.
Bryn has smashed an Endurance from flipping the bike upside down into
a rock pile, but the "protector" wouldn't have made a difference.
You'll need a magnet (I've got several, I'll be happy to stick one in
an envelope and mail it to you) that you can epoxy to the rotor, some
small zip-ties, and the handlebar mount. Next, figure out how to mount
the sensor so that the magnet passes the end of the sensor less than
..5 inch away axially. You'll just have to try a few different
positions to see if the sensor cable is long enough. It has to route
along the brake cable all the way to the master cylinder and then loop
back toward the mount. If it's not the right size, you'll need to talk
to TrailTech to see which cable would work.

When you say "instructions" I'm assuming you mean how to operate the
Endurance, and not how to install the thing. There are some decent
installation instruction. Don't know if they've got the pdf's online,
but my experience with them is they're pretty nice, and wouldn't be
surprised if they'll fax or mail some installation instructions to
you. On my YZ's, the sensor fits into a nice flat spot on the upper
side of the caliper. You drill a 1/8" hole through the soft aluminum
(I was sweating bullets the first time--"WTF, they want me to drill a
hole in the damn CALIPER!?!") and then put a self-tapping screw
through the sensor into the caliper. Works great.
