I suppose it's time for me to go into Grumpy Old Man mode...

As Murray and I listened to Rick and Ben coming up the road WFO, it
made me cringe. When they continued this "race" of theirs off the main
road up to the bridge, I cringed even more. I was about to comment to
Rick when he told me his engine was making clanging noises after the
high speed run, karmic justice kept me from chiding Rick, Ben got away
with nothing said...

I got to thinking about this Yesterday and realized that it was
inappropriate. If you had said something to me at the time it would not have
been a problem. I appologize for making an ass of myself and for
jeopordizing future rides in that area.

This isn't to say I haven't ripped up/down that road a time or two
myself, but that was in the past. These days I keep it under 40 on the
road and make a point of "putting" along once I leave the road on my
way to camp. Baum is a very popular spot, with both riders and
non-riders alike. We have a bad enough problem with public perception,
I don't want to add to it in a high visibility situation like it is at
Baum.

I'm glad that you fessed up to having done it yourself. Makes me feel like
slightly less of an ass.

What about all the non-riders you guys may have impressed with your
speed and bravado? What are they to think of dirtbikers? That you
possess the skill set to ride side by side up a flat, straight dirt
road at 60mph? Woohoo, pretty impressive...

This comment is uncalled for. I wasn't trying to impress anyone. I was
having fun. I gave up trying to impress people a long time ago. Were you
trying to impress people when you did it the first time?

I know, boys will be boys. At the time it probably seemed fairly
innocent, but in the big picture it's not so simple.

Kids these days, what can ya do with them... <G>

As stated above I realize now that it was inapropriate and it will not
happen again in Idaho or any other area that I ride in.

As long as I'm being Grumpy, I have one more bitch to get out:

Even though the fire danger level was set at extreme, there were (are)
fires burning all over the state, some not too far away, it's hot and
extremely dry, there's always the chance of strong winds and several
reminders/warnings from some of us, no one, that I know of, bothered
to put out the F'n group campfire on any of the evenings. It was
always smouldering in the mornings, witness Fred's reports of reviving
it every morning.

I'll accept some responsibility here as well. I have no excuse for not
putting out the fire though. I guess I thought that with such a huge pit and
area around it that it was not an issue. Why didn't you say something after
the first fire?

Am I being a old fuddy-duddy? Yes I am. My name and my reputation are
closely tied to these SpodeFests. I am the one who bears the ultimate
responsibility for the actions of all who attend.

I don't really see how you bear that responsibility. Please explain.

These events are no
secret around here, they have attracted scrunity from the USFS, the
Idaho Dept. of Parks & Rec, local riding clubs and local riders in
general. I've been the focus of some pretty intense criticism over the
years for putting on these events. "You bring in a bunch of
out-of-staters who just tear up the trails and go home, leaving us the
mess...".

This comment is bull***. I know you didn't make it but I hope that you
would have called bull*** on it at the time. I'd like to know how this
person determined that we "tore up the trails" and left the mess. As if out
of staters cause more damage than in staters. By the way, I have
unnecesarily purchased an Idaho OHV sticker at all of the past events
except this one. (cash was tight) I also spend lot's of money in Idaho
while I'm there.

Nevermind, I'm wandering.

My reply has always been that these are hard core, dedicated,
responsible dirtbikers, many of which are active in their own locales
and nationally on access/use issues.

I guess I'm a little disappointed this year with a couple of aspects
of the Fest, which I really had no way of controlling except to rely
on ya'll being mature and responsible. I was however, very happy to
see how clean everyone left their camps and there wasn't any ripping
up of the camping area.

Other than these two things, IMO the Fest was a spectacular success,
ISF vetrans said it was the best yet! I must agree, even though I
didn't really ride that much compared to past Fests I had a most
wonderful time of it. It was a real bummer having to see everyone
pulling out and to have to descend back into the reality of life in
the city...

Grumpy

I thought the fest was a success as well. We've never done a raffle before
to my knowledge and I thought it was a great way to bring everyone together.
Especially for a good cause.

Just out of curiosity David, it seemed to me that you and Murray were being
very antisocial at this event. Was there something that ticked you off
early?

Just so you know your comments have not turned me against you or anyone
else. I'd still love to come and ride in Idaho with you and Murray and keep
it under the speed limit and pee on the fire. I think you did the right
thing speaking your mind.
