Tim,

You remember the trip, ohhh I think it was '95 or thereabouts, when we
camped at Alturus Lake (on the Stanley side of the Sawtooth's)?

Hm-m-m, let me think. You mean the year we got lost in the Sawtooth

We weren't lost, we just couldn't find the trail we intended to ride &
by the time we figured it'd be best to go back the way we came the sun
was over the ridge and you & Chris were on reserve.

OK, if you want to split hairs, we weren't lost by the time we started to
ride back to camp, but we damn sure were while we wandered aimlessly down
the south slope of the mountains looking for something we could locate on
the map, but finding only sheep.

Remember the time we got lost at Belfair, the time we were really
really lost I mean? When Burley asked "are we lost?" we said "yea" and
he took the lead & proceeded to take us to parts of Belfair I swear we
never ever saw again.

It was like being trapped in a Steven King novel. Especially after it got
dark. I really wished that I had a headlight.

Didn't we run into guys in fatigues & asked them which way back to camp?

That was a wierd scene, too. Them boys were strapped, and I have trouble
imagining what business a civiliam sedan full of camo wearing, gun toting
guys were doing in the dark out there.
Somehow, I never even considered asking them.

Mountains and almost froze to death riding 90+ miles from Smokey Bar to
Stanley

Wasn't it Ketchum we rode into? I think that's also where Hemmingway
spent his later years.

Yep, my bad.

and over Galena Summit in the dark with no jackets?

I remember riding while hugging the XR's motor to keep from freezing.
I'll never forget the florescent blue fire balls that kept rushing by
me after a while. They made it difficult to concentrate on the white
line but they sure were pretty and a nice distraction from the
shivering and aching cold.

It was freaking COLD on that ride. Took forever, too.

Ever since that trip, I've never gone on a trail ride without my jacket
and a $20 bill stashed in my fanny pack.

Don't think you'll be lucky enough to find another guy that'll give you fuel
and premix oil for free, trustung you to come back later or mail him what
you owe?
That guy saved our asses.

Tim H
