Re: Clutch Problems on Brand New CRF450X

Big mistake! I've learned over the years to never trust a dealer setup and
prep of an MX machine or any bike for that matter. I actually prefer to
purchase my units in the crate, when possible, as the dealer setup is
usually no more than ensuring that all the pieces from the crate are bolted
together. But, minimally one must always prep the air filter, check fluids,
tighten spokes, check tire pressure and ensure that the drive chain is
properly adjusted and adjusted evenly on both sides of the rear axle. I
even question and typically argue the setup and prep charges whenever a
dealer attempts to charge them. My argument is always, "Why should I pay
you to do something that I have to re-work or redo myself properly once I
get the machine in my possession?" And, it's not a problem with any
particular dealer in question, most dealers simply assemble the bike and
minimally ensure it's in working order before it leaves the showroom. But,
it's a major mistake to presume this even remotely implies that the machine
is ready for a day of riding for anything more than a slow first or 2nd gear
ride for break-in purposes.

As a part of my race prep for my machines, I typically spend roughly 6+
hours prepping them before I ever consider entering them in competition.
It's just a dangerous gamble not to do so, IMHO.

You're not alone in your grievance here I can assure you.

Clutch adjustment seemed normal until it went out. No warning
whatsoever. Maybe naive of me to think the experts at the dealership
who set this thing up would acutally know what they were doing but I
honestly didn't think I had to check anything but fluids on my first
trip out!
