Ima askin you 'cause you had one of these apart recently...

The auto-decomp that screwed you in 5MOH, that actuates 1 or both
exhaust valves?
If only one, which one?

Only the right hand exhaust valve is impacted.

I'm wondering if something similar happens again to another XRL, if its
only on 1 exhaust valve maybe the adjuster could be loosened enough to
get it running.

There are two different decompression mechanisms at work. One of them
keeps the exhaust valve from closing until the piston is halfway thru the
compression stroke when the engine is below 400 rpm.

The second mechanism has a one-way clutch that engages if the engine ever
starts to sping backwards. This mechanism will whack the valve wide open to
prevent kick back. This is the one that failed on my bike. Since the XRL
doesn't use a kick starter, it's kind of a silly remnant from the XR600.
If you remove this item, you will need to put a spacer in it's place.

The first one could certainly be compensated for by backing off the
adjuster.
The second one would require that the adjuster be backed all the way out.
If I'd thought about this, we would have tried it. It certainly would have
beat the team that had to tow the bike out by hand.

You sir, win today's Kudo's award for innovative thinking. Keep
up the good work.
