Was it just a black bear? Or was it a brown bear? Brown bears can
get pretty large... and uhh... sometimes aggressive. Black bears are
pretty docile unless protecting their young. Grizzlies can be VERY
aggressive. But I understand that none are as aggressive as the Polar
bear.
Warning: Silly story...
In high school, in eastern Oregon, I was friends with a kid named
Nathan Lay. His family owned much of the valley where we lived (way
out in the country). They were all hunters, and the father and oldest
son, Joe, held records for various game (including, at that time, the
second largest cougar in the state). The had a bunch of great hounds
and we used them one day to tree a bobcat that I shot. But anyway...
Joe, Nathan and I were out bird hunting one day when Joe decided to
drive by his favorite apple tree to see if any bear were present. As
luck would have it, a big brown bear was chomping on apples.
Upon seeing the truck (and hearing the baying hounds), the bear
bolted for the woods. Well ol' Joe turns around and we go bouncing
through the field in his ol' pickup, heading for a feeder road into
the woods. We get onto the gravel road and Joe heads uphill in an
effort to head off the fleeing bear.
Once we get to a spot where we think the bear might be, Joe anchors
the pickup and everyone jumps out. The hounds are released and the
chase is on! We run off into the woods in vaguely the same direction,
following the baying. I'm runnin' all out and soon lose sight of Joe
and Nathan. I can hear the hounds up ahead somewhere, but it's hard to
tell exactly where they're at. Eventually I stop to catch my breath.
And that's when it hit me...
In the excitement of the action, I had bailed out of the truck and
began the chase with nothing more than an old K-Bar knife! Suddenly
the hounds sounded as if they were coming right at me! (Though, of
course, they weren't). I think I set a new land speed record heading
back toward the pickup!
It was starting to get dusky dark when I arrived back at the truck,
so I didn't bother arming myself and getting back into the frey. I
just sat there and listened to the (now distant) baying. It was fully
dark by the time Joe and Nathan (both armed) returned to the truck
with 2 of the 3 hounds we were using. The bear had escaped, but
apparently one of the hounds was stubbornly not ready to admit defeat.
Joe laid one of his old flannel shirts on the ground near the pickup
and then we took off. Early the next morning Joe found the missing
hound right where it was supposed to be... curled up on that flannel
shirt awaiting a ride home ;->
