My wife and I have been uninsured for a couple of years now but the kids are covered with a good plan. I got salmonella this spring and got really sick. I went to an emergency room in Mexico. $16 for the ER visit and $40 for meds. I imagine a day not to far from now where people will be traveling abroad to get things fixed that are not life or death TODAY i.e. bad car wreck. Brain surgery in India is around $4000.00!
But afterwards you speak English REALLY fast and want to eat a lot of curry.
Somebody (Blue Cross maybe?) is offering a medical insurance policy that pays you to go to Mexican medical facilities. My sister-in-law and her husband just had a lot of dental work and she had lasik on both eyes in Algodones and both are really satisfied. I wouldn't feel comfy having lasik done even by the top US specialist, but perhaps I'm overly cautious.
