Sorta. Fuels are tested by various methods to determine their
resistance to 'knock'. Variable compression ratio engines are
probably the most accurate but infrared absorption is used
for portable testers. In any case, the resistance to detonation
is what is being measured (only maybe in the case of the
infrared device) and it is really an experimentally
determined value. As somebody mentioned, toluene is good
stuff in this case as is cetane, the reference fuel for the variable
compression ratio deal.
For an engine that is detonating and you can't figure out why, or
can't fix the timing and/or mixture to make it stop, Cam2 is
available in every hick town in the country thanks to the
turn left guys. Don't know if they have a website to tell you
where but it's worth checking. My local circle track guy has
two grades even.
