I like this point (or points), and Mike's point about what was [in
the past] expected of you as a member of society. I think, personally,
that another great factor is the vast immigration and multiculturalism
that the U.S. has experienced over the last 50 years or so. I'm not
talking about people coming to America from foreign lands to adapt and
contribute to the American culture, but those that come and rebel
against our culture and insist upon promoting their own culture in
America.
Everyone in the U.S.A., save the Native American Indians, once
arrived from elsewhere... including my own ancestors. So I'm not
suggesting that immigration is the problem. Not at all. In fact,
immigration is responsible for most every advance America has ever
made. I'm just saying that the U.S. *has* an established culture of
it's own. And just like I wouldn't move to England and demand that
they stop partaking of fish & chips, start criticizing the royal
heirchy and suggesting alternatives, and insisting on applications and
government forms written without all the expressly English terminology
that I don't understand, I don't think others should be doing the same
here. And I blame our government and do-good society for allowing it
to happen and erode our existing culture.
So those "dozen generations" that Mike was talking about being
mixed in, should also include the proportionately larger influx of
multi-culturalism that has also effected the big picture.
This is the U.S.A.. And the U.S.A. has an established culture. Stop
disrespecting this culture and allowing it to be disrespected for the
[unreasonable] sake of political correctness. Stop trying to appease
foreigners. Let them adapt, coalesce and unite. The same way those
before them did. Author Samuel P. Huntington's recent book, "Who Are
We?" addresses the issue and may be worth reading even if you disagree
with some of his ideas. And "Victory Through Guilt" by John Attarian
points out how this multiculturalism has been so readily accepted.
