Talked about the possible risk to the donor charging system when giving
someone a jump start. Dad is the original Happenstance Ranger, he purchased
a Battery pack jump starter for such occasions. Dad related a story, at a
Wal-Mart parking lot he offered to give a guy a jump with his auxiliary jump
pack but the guy had his battery so ground dead that it wouldn't turn the
starter. The guy wanted Dad to jump him with his car so the battery could
recharge. Dad wisely refused and made his exit when another Happenstance
Ranger appeared on the scene.
I then went into a rant about how newer computer controlled cars charging
systems don't seem to charge batteries very well. It seems like they just
top off the battery and dead battery needs to put on charger because driving
will take a real long time to charge a battery.
We then talked about good winter battery storage issues. I told of my plans
to leave the batteries in the boat and jet skis this year and put them on an
automatic trickle charger all winter. He reinforced that it had to be a true
automatic charger that actually shuts off the current flow. I said I had one
from NAPA and they assured me it did cut off the current when the battery
was fully charged.
We then proceeded to his garage and talked about his new 2-10-35 amp
electronic controlled battery chargers while he showed me his bank of three
solar panels that he uses to maintain the batteries on his travel trailer.
We next entered into a conversation about how he diagnosed and replaced the
dual capacitor on his air conditioner motor and saved himself a ton on money
because the neighborood electrician told him he it needed a new motor.
He 'again' reminded me the need to drill small holes near the bearing
housing to facilitate bearing lubrication on my air conditioner and furnace
electrical motors. I informed him I hadn't done that yet but it was on my
job list.
