Wright-patterson AFB in Ohio had a 1/4 size (IIRC) dynamically similar
B-17 that was built for ditching tests. The goal was to fly it RC, but
no RC system was available at ANY price at the time to fly the model as
required.
As a result, the model was flown on control lines, from _outside_ the
circle. IIRC, the circle was 300 feet in diameter.
My father had photos of the model.. I haven't seen them in a number of
years, but they're probably around here someplace.
