a modern aircraft carrier (US) is over 800 ft long. Appx 93,000 tons USS
Enterprise is a bit over 900. (virtually the same displacement as the
Carl Vinson, Reagan, Eisenhower..."68 series" carriers ) approximating
1/12 scale would be 800 to 900 inches or 66 ft minimum.
Midway class carriers (Midway, Tarawa, Coral sea as examples) were
appx 975 ft (+/- depending on if you measured at waterline (list
length) or the flight deck, and which refit... since they had assorted
flight decks.) 67,000 tons... Lighter but longer.
The Tarawa (LHA1) at appx 833 is one of the smallest "carriers" in our
fleet. (amphib assault support helis & Harriers)
There were some smaller carriers such as the Lexington... but even
though it only displaced appx 27,000 tones it was still pushing 875
ft!
I'm unable to think of any carrier under 700 ft. Unless maybe the
Langley was that short.

40 sized models would be in the appx 1/12 to 1/8 scale range... thus
you're looking at an appx 70 ft hull. When you get done you'll EASILLY
have $100,000 in it if you build it yourself.
70 ft is a MIGHTY short deck for the average modeler to try to take off
and land from. The deck would also be appx 15 ft wide for a straight
deck... might be 25 ft wide for an angle deck.
You'd definitely be wanting to learn to make the operational catapults
and arrestor gear.

There was a semi-scale 40 to 45 ft carrier built on the hull of an old
Captain's gig which operated in SF bay. No model aircraft were ever
flown off of it to my knowledge. When I saw it, it was outfitted to
resemble the Coral Sea in the early/mid 1970's.
