Some chargers have `polyfuses' rather than diodes. This is a
self-resetting fuse. It'll protect you against that hunk of metal
shorting it out, but you can still discharge through it I think.
Some people open up the case and wire a very small strand of wire from one
side to the other of the diode. It someone screws up, it acts like a fuse
and burns out before much current can hit anything.
