I had an idea and am hopping everyone will weigh in on it. This is
purely conceptual but would like to know some ideas if it could ever
work. I was toying with the idea of the feasibility of a scale sized
floating aircraft carrier, complete with arresting cables and some kind
of catapult. Let's all assume that the pilot would be good enough to
land his gas powered, .40 sized plane on it, what materials would this
project require? What mechanisms would you have to build to have a
fully operational aircraft carrier? What's the size? What's the
cost? Any other tidbits I left out feel free to address. I got
excited just thinking about this and hope my mention of it does the
same for, as well as generate some innovative mechanisms for this
undertaking. If anyone has ever heard of this being done before,
please post photos, stories, or links about it please. Thanks.
Before you spend all the time, effort and money....
Go out to your flying site and mark off an area on the runway about the size
that you think your carrier's deck would be. Then see if you can actually
touch down somewhere in that outline.
And remember if you come up short in your practice sessions, your plane would
be....ready for a significant rebuild, had you been attempting to land on your
actual carrier deck...
