OT Identity theft

Some credit card companies (mine - Citibank) apparantly have a member
profile that alerts them when there is a purchase that doesn't fit your
profile. Just after the Florida hurricanes in 2004 (my wife is fairly
tolerant of discomforts but that does not go as far as not having her coffee
in the morning) I sent for a Coleman multi-fuel stove - best price on line
was REI in Washington state. That tripped the Citibank system and they
called me to ask if I had made the purchase. Again on a trip to NY to help
my brother and sister in-laws pack up and move to Florida, I used my credit
card for a tank of gas (brother in law had bought all the others) and that
also triggered the system.
I would like to see identity theft elevated to something on the same level
as child molestation with VERY stiff penalty if convicted, perhaps a
permanent ban from the internet.
Took a citizens police academy course here. One of the sessions addressed
identity theft. Some of our more devious citizens used this guise in an
attempt to avoid payment on items they actually purchased.
As for this forum - I'm probably as wide open as far as who I am, where I
fly, what I fly as anyone - yet I don't feel this is in anyway setting me up
for identity theft. It must be tough going through life, not belonging to
any clubs, flying at any events, sharing your successes (and failures) on
line and in print, remaining hidden and in the dark as far as modeling forum
members are concerned. I understand the concerns some have over being
spammed and employ fake e-mail addresses to prevent it (at least that is
their argument). I guess I am lucky as my spams are not all that big a deal,
not enough so to wear out my DELETE key. And I have won THREE multi-million
dollar lotteries in just the past week. :-)
Now for the question of the day. Why is it you can purchase a tank full of
gas on your credit card that approaches $50, and no signature is required at
the pump, but check out $20 worth of groceries at your local supermarket and
you have to show ID in addition to your signature on the ticket?
