Re: Dave Brown sounds off on gays in aeromodelling

I was quite proud to learn that one of the local R/C clubs that I belong to
includes a member who was one of the Tuskegee Airmen. Our news letter
featured a story about Col. Charles Lane being honored at a ceremony
unveiling a display of his photos at Omaha's Epply Airport. I've seen Col.
Lane at our field on a few occassions, but I haven't seen him fly. I'd be
more than curious to watch what he could still do while piloting a .60 sized
scale P51!

Many members of our clubs are current or retired air force, as
Omaha/Bellevue are home to Stratcom (formerly Strategic Air Command). It's
a bit humbling to know that the flight trainer coaching me on my landing
approaches with my NexStar has flown the big birds and not just toy
aircraft. The love of flying is what gets all of us out to the field on
evenings and weekends.

As for diversity? I believe our local flying clubs are primarily suburban
in nature. The fields are in the suburbs, the hobby stores are in the
suburbs, and the members are from the suburbs. The racial make-up of the
folks at the field seems to be proportional to the general suburban make-up
of our local metro area.

If your local flying clubs seem to harbor idiots who admire Adolf Hitler for
some reason, that's probably just reflective of a percentage of folks in the
area, too. I can't imagine any particular reason why folks of that mindset
would be disproportionally drawn to the hobby.
