All of the R/C flying clubs that I have belonged to have had minority
members - in minority numbers.
Some cultures frown upon intelligence, education, curiosity and
mechanical
creativity. We were lucky enough to have members of racial minorities
that
ignored this trend and joined us to fly anyway.
The largest obstacle that I could see which prevented minorities from
participating in R/C flying was the financial one. Of course,
minorities
were not alone in suffering from that particular cause. Lots of whites,
young and old, would show up at the field, find out the price of
participation and then disappear, never to be seen again.
If one looks for trouble, one can usually find it. The same is true
about
good things. I prefer to look for good things.
Having had polio as a youngster, I know first hand what it is like to
be
discriminated against. Polio, even in its mildest form, changes your
gait,
your posture and even your voice. It also changes your personality -
usually
to Type A.
Most folks don't care for folks with a Type A personality (aggressive &
goal
oriented), but it was necessary to develop that type of personality in
order
to muster the will power to relearn how to walk again. Instead of being
bitter and blaming everyone else for your problems, you must overcome
the
tendency of feeling excluded and to hide. You must project yourself
into
situations, abuse be damned, and forge ahead. Otherwise, you might as
well
be dead.

Ed, thanks for that information. I, too, had polio at age 7-9 (no one
left to remind me just when, but I know my Dad was then a defense
worker in the Beaumont, TX ship yards).
I kept that a secret when I entered the USAF Aviation Cadet program,
likewise the same secret about getting knocked on my *** for a couple
minutes in a sling-shot fight.
I always wondered why I was considered so agressive and went out and
got things accomplished - except of course those around-the-house
honey-do items. BFG!
All because of polio! The Lord does work in ways.
BTW, this craph about DB saying something about gays is absolutely pure
BS. No such thing in his article.
