Re: Beware of PayPal as a seller

Not only the rubbery nature f some personal checks, but the totally
counterfeit nature of too many cashier's checks.

Cashier's checks, IMHO, are riskier than personal checks.

Buying and selling on the internet is risky with so many crooks out there,
both buyers and sellers. I, for one, will not use PayPal directly (I refuse
to set up an account since they had a problem a couple of years ago, but
that's another story): many sellers will let you use a credit card without a
PayPal account. That's the only way I'll pay.

That way, as a buyer, I have recourse via my credit card company if the
goods are not delivered or severely misrepresented. With a check, money
order, or cashier's check, I have NO recourse, other than postal fraud any
part of the transaction was via US Mail. Good luck actually getting
reimbursed; small claims court is another option.

As a seller (I'm not, by the way), to protect yourself from CC company
chargebacks, document, document, document: use traceable shipments (USPS
priority mail, ups, fed ex) and charge the buyer fairly for that (like the
exact cost), and INSURE your package contents. If the buyer claims shipment
damage or non-delivery, you have tracking and insurance. But you have
something to give the CC company. But above all, try to stay away form the
PayPal arbitration process: somehow, it is rigged against whoever you are.
There are options: see this website (with which I am NOT affiliated in any
way):

Since I'm not a seller, I've not used these guys, and there are others:
Google "PayPal alternative" and you get quite a list. If I were a seller,
I'd want to be able to take credit cards, get the money directly in my
checking account so that all banking, postal, etc., regulation would be
available.
