Here's my take on this subject as an outsider...
This is the first US presidential election that I've ever paid
attention to (I think the same can be said of many of my friends in
Europe, Australasia and elsewhere).
The reasons this one is so interesting - Obama, Palin and the last 8
years...
Firstly Obama.
Whatever his policies or substance to what he says, he's incredibly
engaging, charasmatic and comes across very measured in his talks.
This in contrast to George W over the past 8 years is like a breath of
fresh air...
Again, as an outsider, I can't say whether Obama's words are hollow or
not, but he makes a great impression on the surface. And look I don't
know if being articulate, eloquent and sucient is a sign of
intellegence, or whether such attributes are even important in a good
US president, but to an outsider like me it is impressive after George
W. I'm not easily fooled by 'smooth talkers' either (I personally have
to deal with a lot of high-level business sales people in my
profession). Obama however 'appears' to have substance and conviction
in what he's saying....maybe he's just a brilliant sales guy though, I
obviously can't say. But as a 'figure head' or 'statesman' of America,
I don't think you should underestimate the importance of a president
that can make a good impression to the rest of the world.
What I like most about Obama though, is that he seems thoughtful,
measured and willing to try a different approach to his predecesors
when it comes to issues like Iran. To me he sounds the least likely of
the 2 presidential candidates to lead the US (and by default the rest
of the world) into another war....
Secondly Palin....frightening comes to mind.
We're dumbfounded that this woman is a heart beat away from the
presidency. That she could be the 2nd in command of the worlds most
powerfull military sends shivers down my spine...
She strikes me as a tireless hard working type who's operationally
sound, but she seems way out of her league in diplomatic matters, and
her extreme religious views are scary.
She is not very clued up about the world outside Alaska (although
efforts are clearly being made to 'fasttrack' her in this regard).
After the US pretty much going it alone the past 8 years, I think it's
important that you have a leader to is going to build relationships
with the outside world.
To me, McCain Palin don't seem like they'll do that as effectively as
Obama Biden.
Again, I might be wrong as an outsider, but this is the general
consensus amongst people I speak to. Obama strikes us as the type of
guy that will get the world back on the side of America. He'll build
bridges, strengthen relationships, etc.
McCain however doesn't give us that impression. He seems like another
Bush in spite of what his campaign keeps telling us (tainted by
association?) I have tremendous respect for his Vietnam POW
experience, but can I see him leading America to forge stronger ties
with the rest of the world....? No, not really. I see him losing his
temper/patiance with Iran and issuing a preemptive strike that
launches us into WW3...
