Man beats skin cancer after being treated with five billion clones of his
own immune cells
Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, caused by intense exposure to
the sun
A man has fought off advanced skin cancer after being treated with clones of
his own immune cells.
In just two months the 52-year-old's tumours, which had spread to a lymph
node and one lung, were gone.
Usually advanced malignant melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer,
is notoriously hard to treat once it starts spreading.
Doctors extracted specialist white blood cells from the man and cloned them
in a laboratory, increasing the total number by up to 5,000 times.
The infection-fighting CD4 T-cells were then infused into the patient.
Not only was he free of tumours after two months, but there was also no sign
of cancer two years later.
The American scientists behind the pioneering treatment are quick to point
out that the breakthrough involved just one patient.
But the team from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle are
confident further trials will show it was not a fluke.
The patient had a specific type of immune system with tumour cells producing
a specific 'flag' antigen recognised by the T-cells.
Even though only half to three-quarters of the tumour cells bore the 'flag',
all the cancer regressed.
The experts think the treatment may have caused the patient's immune system
to broaden out and recognise other tumour antigens.
The treatment could be used for the 25 per cent of late-stage melanoma
sufferers with the same profile as the trial patient.
Ed Yong, of Cancer Research UK, said: 'It's very exciting to see a cancer
patient being successfully treated using immune cells cloned from his own
body.
'While it's always good news when anyone with cancer gets the all-clear,
this treatment will need to be tested in large clinical trials to work out
how widely it could be used.'
