It's a staple of 80s Ninja movies, but it's true: Catching a falling
cup. Actually the idea for this came to me as I caught a water bottle
which fell off my desk yesterday. A passing student knocked it off,
and even though I was rummaging through my bag for a teacher's book,
my right hand shot out and caught it as it tipped over. I surprised
myself but I don't think anyone else noticed.
Yep. The movies reflecting real life - a turn-up, to be sure.
I'd even go so far as to "speculate" that combined with situational
awareness, "fast eyes and fast hands" are a prerequisite for good
martial arts.
Absolutely!
So, how about you? Do you have any cup-catching stories to share? :)
I frequently catch things with the same hand that I nudged it off with, with
reaching into cupboards and suchlike. I'm not sure of my success rate, but
it's probably above 75% of the time that I'm able to catch the thing I just
nudged off into space, with the same hand that created the accident. It's a
slightly spooky skill, to watch an almost out of body experience, as I
observe that I've just caught the falling object in a split second, as if I
had time to contemplate how to go about it.
I've gained this skill, but I haven't gained the skill of knowing not to
rummage into cupboards with glassware, when dog-tired. I still keep making
that mistake.
