Chen Xin, in "illustrated canon" makes several references to chi in a
way which implies it is an observation. For example, in order to keep
yuan qi smooth, one must necessarily be aware of how smooth it is
currently and when it becomes rough.

By way of being an authoritative reference this implies every
*credible* tai chi player also uses this definition.

Note the word credible.

Just a couple of comments:

Even assuming you are an authoritative source on taiji credibility,
the point clearly arises that it does not imply that it is the only
definition, or even that it's the only definition in that reference.

Also, you still seem to be confusing the everyday use of
"observation", which includes personal feeling and perception, with
"observation" in the sense of scientific measurement.
