Re: Iron Palm and Iron Vest Workshop: Earlybird Discount Ends Soon!

In Chen Style Tai Chi there are foot stomps done in which the knee is raised
up then the foot is dropped rapidly allowing gravity to accelerate the foot
and without shifting the weight to the dropping foot. The result is a
powerful stomp that has a bit of vibration on impact. It has long been said
that this increases bone density in the legs. Doind some research to
validate this, I found a study on prefessional tennis players that showed
they had a 35% increase in bone density in their playing arm. The vibration
transmitted to their arm when the raquet hit the ball stimulates the body to
increase bone denisty. Soloflex has even created a vibration platform they
advertise as helping to increase bone denisty just by standing on it.

The relaxed, loose slaps of iron palm training produce the impact and
vibration that seems to be required for stimulating the increase of bone
density, so while I don't know of any direct studies on bone density and
iron palm training, other studies support the principle used.

I agree with your statement that increased bone density alone would have a
negligible effect on making punches more "devastating" but denser bones are
less likely to break under a given stress (tai chi studies on seniors show
less incidents of hip fractures in those who practice tai chi because they
have better balance and are less likely to fall and when they do fall, the
increased bone density reults in fewer fracture). Therefore the training
allows you to strike with more of your full power with less chance on injury
which is of less concern when you are wearing any kind of gloves in
competitions.

In addition, the iron palm training is not just conditioning, it is
"technique" and teaches you to stay relaxed in your stirkes. When the
agonistic muscle is fully realxed, the strike is faster and that does make a
big difference in power.

Boxers and martial artists for competition might be satisfied with bag work
(which should also help bone desity but not to the same degree), but for
bare knuckle situations, the training is more useful.

I have yet to see anyone offer any evidence whatsoever that iron palm
training does anything at all towards increasing the density of
bones. Nor have I seen any evidence to suggest that denser bones,
even if they were the result, would lead to devastating strikes.
Punching power is the result of mass and velocity; density of the
bones would have a negligible effect no matter how significant.

Denser bones *might* translate into less chance of injury when one
hits, but frankly even if someone could prove that iron palm training
raises bone density (which, as I've already mentioned, nobody has) the
increase in desnity would have to be incredibly substancial to have
any effect.
