Russia and Argentina? Those aren't collapsed societies. They are

The USSR had some "financial issues"? This is a bigger undersell than
I've seen in some time. The mfer COLLAPSED, dude...
And Russia is now "uncollapsing" - bigtime. A veritable Phoenix, risen
from the ashes.
Regards.
PS Save your confederate money, boys, the South's gonna rise again.
(Well, rubles, but you get the idea :-)
PPS I spent some time in Russia during the "hard times" (consulting for
the World Bank and EBRC - spit!) and was *extremely* impressed with the
educational level, skills, and competence of the intelligentsia and
professional classes there (the working classes may have been great, too,
but I had much less contact with them).
I went to Russia prepared to convey my "wisdom from the mount" and
discovered, for instance, that the fellows in the technical institutes,
even the ones in the sticks outside Moscow, (PhDs all) were fully up to
date on the latest Canadian, US, Norwegian, British, and German technical
stuff - cutting edge stuff that most could read in the original language
of publication, not in translation (many spoke several languages). I ate
a very large dish of humble pie.
Even the paid guide who took me on a tour of the Kremlin and such (a
*very* beautiful woman in her mid 30s) had immense knowledge and
education (not to mention style and grace). She was a PhD, too - forced
by the hard times to take work far beneath her skill level, educating
bumpkins like me. My one salvation is that, while I appreciated her
beauty and style as well as her erudition (only a dead man could be
oblivious to her charms), I did not embarrass us both by making unseemly
advances.
(There were other ladies, who, while not up to her standards, were very
pretty and by no means unpolished or unsophisticated and who were far
more open to such overtures. Many Russian women - not all, but many -
are very beautiful and not the "eat cabbage, pull plow" stereotypical
matrons you might imagine. Nor were they "behind the curve" in sexual
skills.)
