We have a street cop, a detective (and his wife), and a federal air marshall
all training regularly. There's another air marshall and a cop that come in
occasionally - especially when we have seminars. The attraction seems to be
that we cover all ranges of fighting (striking, locking and throwing) and
the qinna techniques are especially effective for close fighting in confined
spaces. I imagine styles that only have longer range kicking and punching
techniques seem less practical to this group as they would prefer to use
their weapons at longer ranges. We teach northern shaolin kung fu and our
training includes the dreaded air punching of doing forms to teach basic
movements and combinations, moves on to practicing drills with compliant
partners to held learn distance control, timing and other adjustments for
opponents of different sizes, adds bag work to practice with full power, and
then moves on to trying the techniques in live training with a resisting
partner to make sure you can apply the techniques.

Seems to me that most grappling MA classes have quite a bit of cops in
them. In BJJ there's one or two that I know, in a small nearby JJJ
club were I trained for 6 mths there were two, and the JJJ club that I
trained at as a kid was comprised almost completely out of cops (all
of the trainers, most of the adult students).
In savate and thai/kick boxing I haven't met one cop. The savate club
I train at is kind of linked to a hardcore group of soccer fans of one
specific soccer club. The kickboxing club was more open to outsiders
but there were, afaik, no cops at all training there.
What's your experience in this?
