Re: OT - Hotel Rwanda movie

They were Belgian not French. Just so you know the French trained the
Hutu
militia. When they went back in, after the slaughter of the Tutsis, under
the UN flag they were welcomed by the Hutus.

My bad. I was going by the accent. Yes I'm aware of those
allegations.

Well the Belgians were no saints either. They were the ones that orginally
put the Tutsis in charge and then issued everyone an ID card that stated
whether one was Hutu or Tutsi. It was Belgian troops that got pulled out by
the UN. They could have stayed and tried to stop the slaughter. To their
credit they did shred their blue berets in disgust. So much for UN peace
keeping.

The hotel manager of course was the real hero. But there were other
small
unnamed people that took similar action just like the real heroes in
every
disaster such as Katrina.

Who?

The guys in the bass boats that were going around picking up stranded
people when the government and Red Cross were nowhere to be found.
Thank God for bass fishing!

Well that is not exactly true. The Red Cross had loaded trucks at the
airport Tuesday morning ( the day after the hurricane). The Louisiana Office
of Homeland Security held those trucks up because of the anarchy that had
broken out in New Orleans. The Governor failed to use the National Guard
troops that sat 50 miles away to stop the anarchy. She did not want to treat
her constituency like criminals - local politics - they were criminals and
proved it. The true heros were the churches that opened shelters
immediately. 70,000 whites fled St Bernard Parish. It was wiped out. You did
not hear much about them. The news was to focused on the Superdome which was
the Mayors *** up. There was a tremendous lot of bad reporting that went
on. It was astounding.

Notably absent was any discussion about the
Clinton administration's actions (or lack thereof) during this time.

Notably absent was the absence of any western's countrys invovlement in
helping out.
It would not have taken much to stop it. However, it was a UN operation
not
a US operation. Are you suggesting we should have acted unilaterally?.

From what I've read the Clinton administration actively worked to
block UN
action.

I would not know about that. The UN was already there with troops and pulled
them out. I cannot even blame Clinton for that. After Somalia we did not
want invovlement in another fiasco. Understandable.
My My are you now JOINING THE BLAME AMERICA FIRST CROWD LIKE YOU ACCUSED ME
OF. TCH TCH.

The
funniest scene in the movie was at the end where a group of machete
wielding thugs were still walking down the street looking for victims
to
chop up only to be gunned down by the advancing rebel army. As the
saying goes, never bring a knife to a gun fight.

Hardly funny.

Ok. Forgive me for not shedding a tear for a bunch of murderous thugs
getting gunned down in the act of marching off to commit more murder.
I suppose I should be sad about that. I guess I should said "ironic"
funny
as opposed to "ha ha funny". It's just hard to believe that someone
would
be SO intent on killing their neighbors that the fact that they were
being
overrun by another army just didn't seem to cross their minds.

OK you are forgiven. I was thinking about the terror of the fleeing refugees
caught between two warring elements.
