Not in my experience. The vast majority of folks who practice martial
arts *say* that one of the benefits of MA is Self Defense but that
same vast majority also participate in sporting venues related to
their chosen arts.

Nah; the vast majority goes home after class at the strip mall.
Or at least that's the group primarily identified by the detractors.
