As I said if you have a small group of friends training the same way, and

True. This has worked well for my small "club."
Also the intent is different between studio sparring, DB style fighting and
tournament fighting (which can be very chaotic due to the plethora of
rules). You want a tournament, with it's potential for liability issues to
be low key for weapons stuff. Are they gonna have a rescue squad vehicle on
hand? Even though a thrust to the face is illegal, if you get one warning
people will try it anyway. Masks can slip. ;-)
Honestly I don't think it'll be a problem. I admit that I could be very,
very wrong.
I also wouldn't want to be the ref and have to tell people their blades
were too big, pointy, or mask too threadbare. ;-)
I've seen them do it in other tournaments. I don't think they have a bit
of a problem with it.
Heck, rent the equipment from a fencing club/store, and spend a couple
hundred on rubber chalk knives - better that than spend money on an
insurance claim. In fact, I think this idea is better tabled for next year
while the kinks are worked out. The organizers should have several training
clinics using the rules they intend and see how it works out, imo.
Interesting idea. You should email Jared. He's very approachable.
Peace favor your sword (IH),
